Stories Carved in Stone

We are fortunate to be living in an area of the United States where original American art is abundant, and in most cases free to appreciate. There are outdoor museums just down the road, and so many people drive right by without ever seeing the beauty available to them. These art galleries are commonly called cemeteries, or burying grounds. Each one contains numerous examples of early American artistry. Research is being done every day, trying to identify thecraftsmen responsible for this art. Their work has endured, standing tall through hundreds of New England seasons, but they will not last forever in their current condition. Between the chemical pollutants of the Industrial Age and the simple ravages of time, these monuments to our forefathers are deteriorating. Our goal is to identify and preserve them for future generations. Feel free to visit our Gravestone Gallery and enjoy some of their work.

Stories Carved in Stone is a series of books by Rusty and Bob Clark depicting the colonial era cemeteries and gravestones of the West Springfield, Massachusetts area. This multi volume collection covers a number of original settlers in the Connecticut River valley and features over 200 photos and illustrations in each book. Local history, colonial gravestone carvers, family lore and numerous epitaphs from the original headstones make fascinating reading.
